| Chemistry 401 (201) | Chemistry 234 (134), Chemistry 341 (241) | 1 |
| Chemistry 403 (203) | Chemistry 401 (201) | 1 |
* As an alternative, students can substitute Chemistry 117 and 118 for Chemistry 115, 116, and 215. Chemistry 117 and 118 provides an advanced, in-depth treatment of chemistry principles. Students who wish to enroll in Chemistry 117 need a minimum math ACT score of 26 or math SAT score of 600 and a minimum score of 9 on Part II (diagnostic) of the departmental chemistry placement examination. Students who complete the Chemistry 117/118 course sequence will receive a total of 10 credit hours and thereby reduce the total number of required chemistry hours for a B. A. degree from 33 to 31.
B. Elective chemistry classes (7 hours)
This requirement is fulfilled by completing 7 credit hours of elective courses approved by the department. At least one course must be a 3-credit 300-level or higher chemistry course. A B. A. major may use Agricultural Biochemistry 410 (210) as an elective chemistry course. No more than three hours of undergraduate research credit hours can be used to fulfill this chemistry elective requirement.
C. Other required courses (69 hours)
| Courses | Comment | Credit Hours |
|---|---|---|
| English 101 and 102 (1 and 2) | - | 6 |
| Math 155 and 156 (15 and 16) | - | 8 |
| Physics 101 and 102 (1 and 2) | may substitute Physics 111 and 112 (11 and 12) | 8 |
| Cluster Aa | no more than 2 courses can come from the same discipline | 12 |
| Cluster Ba | no more than 2 courses can come from the same discipline | 12 |
| Cluster C | must include a lab, generally satisfied by a year of biology | 8 |
| Fine Arts | separate from the Cluster A and B requirements | 3 |
| Foreign Language | four sequential 3-credit courses in the same language | 12 |
aOne of the courses used to fulfill the Cluster A and B requirements must also satisfy the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences International Studies requirement.
Cluster A Requirements:
1. Courses must be successfully completed in three different disciplines.
2. Two courses must be successfully completed in the same discipline.
3. No more than one first-semester course of an elementary foreign language may be used to fulfill the cluster A requirement.
4. No more than one MDS course may be used to fulfill the cluster A requirement.
Cluster B Requirements:
1. Courses must be successfully completed in three different disciplines.
2. Two courses must be successfully completed in the same discipline.
3. No more than one MDS course may be used to fulfill the cluster B requirement.
Cluster C Requirement:
Eight hours of non-chemistry electives from Cluster C and/or engineering courses that include a lab, excluding required math and physics courses.
Fine Arts Requirement:
Courses that can be used to fulfill the Fine Arts requirement are listed below with the new and old course numbers. Some of the courses listed on pages 95-96 of the 1999-2001 undergraduate course catalog are no longer offered (NLO). A few courses that were listed in the 1999-2001 catalog are not listed (NL) as satisfying the Fine Arts requirement in the 2001-2003 catalog. Consequently, always check the appropriate undergraduate catalog when you entered the University.
Writing Requirement:
All students must complete at least one designated writing course, W. The W courses offered by the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences are listed below with the new and old course numbers.
Chemistry Capstone Requirement:
Beginning in the fall, 2002 semester, all new students pursuing a B. A. degree in chemistry must now complete Chemistry 401 and 403 to fulfill the Chemistry Capstone requirement. The completion of these two one-credit courses, which are taken sequentially during the last two semesters of residence, has reduced the minimum number of required chemistry elective hours from 9 (prior to fall 2002) to 7.
D. General electives (26 or more hours)
The minimum number of hours required for a B. A. degree in chemistry is 128. A student needs to complete a minimum of 16 hours per semester in order to graduate in four years. A grade of C or better in all prerequisites for chemistry courses is required for chemistry majors. The minimum cumulative G.P.A. requirement for graduation is 2.0 and a 2.00 average must be maintained in all chemistry courses at the 300 and 400 levels (excluding courses numbered in the 490's).
A student pursuing a B. A. degree in chemistry and a B. S. degree in another discipline will need to complete 158 hours to receive these two degrees.
