* Alternatively, students may substitute Chemistry 117 and 118 for Chemistry 115, 116, and 215. Chemistry 117 and 118 provides an advanced, in-depth treatment of fundamental chemical principles. Beginning in fall 2008, students who wish to enroll in Chemistry 117 may qualify by 1) obtaining a score of 4 or 5 on the Advanced Placement examination in Chemistry or 2) having a minimum math ACT score of 26 or math SAT score of 600 and a minimum score of 14 on the Qualifying Exam for Chemistry 117. Students who complete the Chemistry 117/118 course sequence will receive a total of 10 credit hours and thereby reduce the total number of required hours for the B. A. Biochemistry degree by 2.

#At least one chemistry course numbered 310 or higher must be completed to fulfill this requirement.
D. General Education Curriculum (31 hours)
Effective with the beginning of the fall 2005 semester, all students entering the University must fulfill the requirements of the General Education Curriculum by taking appropriate courses to satisfy nine specific learning objectives. Specific information about the nine learning objectives and pertinent courses is available as a pdf file.
| Learning Objectives | Requirement | Credit Hours |
|---|---|---|
| Objective 1: Communication | Completion of English 101, 102; completion of foreign language requirement for B. A. Biochemistry degree; completion of capstone in major and a Writing (W) course | 9 |
| Objective 2: Basic Math Skills and Scientific Inquiry | Satisfied by required chemistry, math, and physics courses needed to complete B. A. Biochemistry degree | - |
| Objective 3: The Past and Its Traditions | Completion of one course from list | 3 |
| Objective 4: Contemporary Society | Completion of one course from list | 3 |
| Objective 5: Artistic Expression | Completion of one course from list | 3 |
| Objective 6: The Individual in Society | Completion of University 101 or equivalent course and one additional course from list | 4 |
| Objective 7: American Culture | Completion of one course from list | 3 |
| Objective 8: Western Culture | Completion of one course from list | 3 |
| Objective 9: Non-Western Culture | Completion of one course from list | 3 |
Note: A maximum of 2 courses taken in one discipline outside the major may be used to fulfill the GEC objectives and no GEC course can be used to satisfy more than one GEC objective.
E. General electives (7 or more hours)
The minimum number of hours required for a B. S. degree in chemistry is 128. A student needs to complete a minimum of 16 hours per semester in order to graduate in four years. A grade of C or better in all prerequisites for chemistry courses is required for B. A. biochemistry majors with a chemistry emphasis. The minimum cumulative G.P.A. requirement for graduation is 2.0.
