*As an alternative, students can substitute Chemistry 117 and 118 for Chemistry 115, 116, and 215. Chemistry 117 and 118 provides an advanced, in-depth treatment of chemistry principles. Students who wish to enroll in Chemistry 117 need a minimum math ACT score of 26 or math SAT score of 600 and a minimum score of 9 on Part II (diagnostic) of the departmental chemistry placement examination. Students who complete the Chemistry 117/118 course sequence will receive a total of 10 credit hours and thereby reduce the total number of required hours for a B. A. Biochemistry degree by 2.

#At least one chemistry course numbered 310 or higher must be completed to fulfill this requirement.
D. Required LSP courses (45 hours)
| Courses | Comment | Credit Hours |
|---|---|---|
| English 101 and 102 (1 and 2) | - | 6 |
| Cluster Aa | No more than 2 courses can come from the same discipline | 12 |
| Cluster Ba | No more than 2 courses can come from the same discipline | 12 |
| Fine Arts | separate from the Cluster A and B requirements | 3 |
| Foreign Language | four sequential 3-credit courses in the same language | 12 |
aOne of the courses used to fulfill the Cluster A and B requirements must also satisfy the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences International Studies requirement.
Cluster A Requirements:
1. Courses must be successfully completed in three different disciplines.
2. Two courses must be successfully completed in the same discipline.
3. No more than one first-semester course of an elementary foreign language may be used to fulfill the cluster A requirement.
4. No more than one MDS course may be used to fulfill the cluster A requirement.
Cluster B Requirements:
1. Courses must be successfully completed in three different disciplines.
2. Two courses must be successfully completed in the same discipline.
3. No more than one MDS course may be used to fulfill the cluster B requirement.
Fine Arts Requirement:
Courses that can be used to fulfill the Fine Arts requirement are listed below with the new and old course numbers. Some of the courses listed on pages 95-96 of the 1999-2001 undergraduate course catalog are no longer offered (NLO). A few courses that were listed in the 1999-2001 catalog are not listed (NL) as satisfying the Fine Arts requirement in the 2001-2003 catalog. Consequently, always check the appropriate undergraduate catalog when you entered the University.
Writing Requirement:
All students must complete at least one designated writing (W) course, W.
E. General electives (5 or more hours)
The minimum number of hours required for a B. S. degree in chemistry is 128. A student needs to complete a minimum of 16 hours per semester in order to graduate in four years. A grade of C or better in all prerequisites for chemistry courses is required for B. A. biochemistry majors with a chemistry emphasis. The minimum cumulative G.P.A. requirement for graduation is 2.0.
